Welcome to Crawley Down Village Website

Crawley Down Sign

Crawley Down Village, together with Copthorne Village is in Worth Parish Council and is situated in the northeast corner of West Sussex close to the borders of Surrey and Kent. Crawley Down is close to the M23 and only about a ten minute drive from Gatwick airport, Three Bridges and East Grinstead railway stations.

Until 1967 the village was served by Grange Road railway station on the three Bridges to Tunbridge Wells Line which was closed as a result of the Beeching Axe. The old track bed has been revitalised as a linear Country Park called the Worth Way which now offers a haven for wildlife and valued trail for walkers, cyclists and horse riders. The Worth way extends to Crawley in the West and East Grinstead in the East.

The website is a community project run by the Crawley Down Village Website Association. The Association is funded by a number of local businesses. This funding is then used to provide much need grants for local Crawley Down organisations. For further information about grants that we have given go to “The Association” page and follow the link you will find there.

The site provides a wealth of information about the village and its surrounding areas. So, if you want to know about the local schools, churches, transportation, amenities, sports facilities and much more, you should find all you need here.

The site also has an extensive photo gallery featuring up-to-date as well historic photographs. The gallery is updated frequently. The most recent addition to the gallery being a number of photographs taken from Crawley Down Cricket Club archives. We have provided sub-domains for the Parish Church of All Saints' and also the Residents Association (CDRA).

14/4/14 Turners Hill Fire Station

West Sussex Fire & Rescue service is currently recruiting at Turners Hill Fire Station. The station is currently crewed by retained (part time) fire fighters. A lot of people seem to believe that the fire fighters are volunteers but this is not the case, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service do not have any volunteer fire fighters at any of their stations.

Retained fire fighters are sent to the same type of incidents as our whole time (full time) colleagues, the only difference is that whole time fire fighters stay at the fire station while on duty and retained fire fighters respond from their home or place of work.

Turners Hill Fire Station has what is known as a first line fire engine, this means it could be the first fire engine to attend any incident such as a house fire, a road traffic collision or a major incident at Gatwick, and yes a cat stuck up a tree!!

How it works;
Retained fire fighters have to undertake a medical, fitness test, maths and english test, and some other tests to make sure they are ok with heights, tight spaces and able to carry certain equipment etc. If they are able to complete these they will attend a two week initial training course which when completed successfully they become a probationary fire fighter for two years. After this period they will be classed as a competent fire fighter.

To become a retained fire fighter you must live or work within 4 min of Turners Hill Fire Station. At your interview it will be discussed what hours you can offer, you will be paid a yearly retainer and paid for every hour you are called out for. You must be able to attend a 2 hour drill night every Tuesday 1900-2100. If you are needed for an emergency you will be called via a pager and you must attend the station within 4min of this call. If you feel you could be woken at 2am and within 4 min on your way to save someone's life you can get further information by registering your interest by calling 01243 642134 or visit the West Sussex Fire & Rescue website.
